It's presented annually to a person who has made a significant impact on research in information retrieval. The award was set up in memory of Tony Kent, Ph.D. (1933-1997), who made a major contribution to the development of information science and to information services, particularly in the field of chemistry. The 2008 award was presented to professor Kalervo Järvelin of the University of Tampere, Finland.
