The EContent 100 list of companies that matter most in the digital content industry is now in its 16th year. Similar to most adolescents, it's going through some changes. We added new judges and new categories. As a result, we've got many new companies on the list. Among other changes, this year we added Online Video as a standalone category. We all know that video's popularity is on the rise; and as it's becoming a bigger part of the content puzzle, it clearly needed its own category.

A recent commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of commercetools confirmed traceable business benefits of content commerce strategies. More than half (51%) of companies who have combined their content and commerce strategies say increased sales are a main driver. However, the study also exposes the technological and organizational challenges that need to be overcome to capitalize on content commerce in the long term.

The use of ad blockers has been on the rise, cutting deeper into publishers' already slim profits. Now, The Atlantic is fighting back, announcing, "Visitors to our site who use an ad or script blocker will now see a message offering two options: Whitelist The Atlantic, or purchase an ad-free subscription. While we're in beta, we won't prevent ad-block users from continuing to read The Atlantic. But our intention is to soon ask ad-block users to make a choice."

Digital Content Next (DCN) released new findings it commissioned from comScore's July 2016 research, "The Halo Effect". The follow-up analysis of the original data found that video ads served on premium sites yielded 68% higher brand lift than video on non-premium sites and drove even higher brand lift when looking at sales funnel brand metrics.

Optimove, a customer marketing cloud, announced that it has raised $20 million in growth funding from Israel Growth Partners, a private equity investment firm that focuses on later stage investments. The round marks the first funding for the nearly eight-year-old company, after three straight years of 100% year-over-year growth, according to Optimove.

Adblock Plus, a popular browser extension for blocking online advertisements, running on more than 100 million active devices, launched the beta version of an adtech platform for publishers. Adblock Plus teamed with publisher platform-provider ComboTag to build what will be known as the Acceptable Ads Platform, an interactive platform that lets publishers and bloggers choose from a marketplace of pre-whitelisted ads that they can drag and drop onto their sites.
