In order to survive, everything must evolve. The EContent 100 list of companies that matter most in the digital content industry is no exception. Every year during the voting process, we see how the changing list reflects the way the larger industry is developing. In 2017, a couple of trends emerged. The first, is the importance of artificial intelligence (AI), which is probably obvious to anyone in the content business. The second is the increasing importance of digital asset management (DAM). Next year, DAM will need its own category, but this year, we did our best to honor its contributions to the industry within our existing framework.

At Adobe MAX, the Creativity Conference, Adobe unveiled the next generation of Creative Cloud, including four brand new applications, Adobe XD CC for experience design, Adobe Dimension CC for 2D to 3D compositing, Character Animator CC for 2D animation, and an all-new cloud-based photography service, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC. In addition, Adobe announced feature updates to its flagship applications including Photoshop CC, InDesign CC, Illustrator CC, and Premiere Pro CC, and ongoing expansion of its Adobe Stock service.

Qubit, providers of personalization technology, launched Qubit Aura, a product discovery solution for mobile web. The product has been built to help retail brands tackle a specifically mobile issue: while shoppers now spend equal time on mobile and desktop, the conversion rate for mobile is only half. Qubit Aura sits on an existing mobile website and, through AI-powered personalization, changes the products a user will see based on their behavior.

Kristen Meinzer, senior producer with podcast network Panoply, which helps companies produce and monetize podcasts, draws heavily on both communication and technical skills in her job. "I engineer, edit, and produce podcasts, and I also co-host and co-write my own podcast, By the Book," Meinzer says. She also manages a team of podcast producers, but says, "I prefer the word ‘advocate' or ‘go-to person' over ‘manager.'"

PacketZoom, which provides in-app mobile networking technology, published its Q2 Mobile Observatory and Benchmarks Report. Based on data from the PacketZoom Analytics Platform, the company found that The Netherlands shows the fastest response time for mobile apps, followed by the United Kingdom, France, and Taiwan. The United States was ranked 13th among leading countries, with an average response time of 458 milliseconds, only slightly better than the global average of 438 milliseconds.
