The Onion Introduces a Metered Paid Model for Overseas Readers

Aug 09, 2011

Satirical news source The Onion is implementing a subscription model for non-U.S. visitors. Those who want to read more than five stories within 30 days are charged a $2.95 monthly fee, or given the option to pay a $29.95 annual fee. The meter is powered by RR Donnelley's Press+ billing system.

The New York Times implemented a similar model on in March. The Onion maintains that this metered paid model is a test to see how its international readers respond. The move may precede a paid model for U.S. readers.
