Skype will acquire GroupMe, a group messaging company founded in 2010 which lets users form impromptu groups with which they can text message, share data, and make conference calls free of charge. The price is reported to be between $50 million and $85 million. GroupMe service is supported on Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, and Windows phones.
Skype is in the process of itself being acquired by Microsoft, although regulators have not given final approval. This move reflects Skype's goal of supporting mobile and multi-platform communication. GroupMe is geared to the consumer market, rather than the enterprise market, and has gained about $11.5 million in funding since it formed last year.
