Curated video news is coming to Roku via AOL On, according to GigaOm. Within the next few weeks, a software update will bring a news home screen to most devices. The content for the channel will be provided exclusively by the AOL On platform, but the partnership is not without its critics.
The decision does seem to be raising some eyebrows in Roku's direction. As GigaOm reports, "And Roku's decision to turn AOL On into its default news source marginalizes other news channels, and forces publishers to go through AOL as opposed to their own app if they want to reach an audience on Roku." The partnership not only has the potential to tick off some news providers, but also limits users' access to the news of their choice.
