Penguin Withdraws, Reinstates Kindle Library Lending

Nov 23, 2011

Earlier this week, book publisher Penguin Group revoked access to new ebooks from libraries and suspended the "Get for Kindle" library lending option on all of its ebook titles, citing security concerns. Penguin has since restored library lending for Kindle on all existing ebooks, but its new ebook titles remain unavailable to libraries in any format pending further information from Penguin.

Penguin's ebooks are made available to libraries through OverDrive, which explained in a blog post that Penguin had asked OverDrive "to suspend availability of new Penguin eBook titles...and disable ‘Get for Kindle' functionality for all Penguin eBooks." It is unclear whether Penguin's concerns are related to OverDrive or to Amazon.
