The National Capital Region Library Consortium recently selected Fretwell Downing, Inc.'s ZPORTAL software to power its Sm@rtLibrary project. ZPORTAL is a consortium of partners consisting of government, hospital, college, university, public and business libraries, including the Library and Archives of Canada; the Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI) and the Library of Parliament. Fretwell-Downing's ZPORTAL software provides the Sm@rtLibrary project with the functionality required to provide access to the participants' catalogs. It also offers the capability to expand beyond the initial implementation to provide a more broadly-based access to cultural resources. The initial partners in the project are the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Ottawa Public Library, CISTI and the Library and Archives of Canada. The venture is a sub-project of the SmartCapital/Capitale géniale, coordinated by the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI). SmartCapital/Capitale géniale was selected by Industry Canada as Ontario's Smart Communities Demonstration Project. Demonstration projects are intended to foster centers of expertise in the innovative use of technology.
