Name With the Face: Melissa Johnson
Job Title: Content Editor
SaleHoo is an online wholesale directory and community for online traders, eBay sellers, and traditional retailers that is owned by Doubledot Media. In her role as SaleHoo content editor, Melissa Johnson says, "The goal is to educate our customers and help them build a thriving business for themselves. You can't do that without high-quality content."
Johnson edits "whatever comes my way"-blog posts, newsletters, lessons, and even emails. "I also moderate and respond to blog comments and post to social media," she says. Johnson sees the job of editor as gatekeeper and last defense, ensuring that content quality is keeping customers happy and well-informed.
In a Day's Work
"My cardinal rule is this," says Johnson: "Nothing gets done without caffeine." She has regular responsibilities such as moderating blog comments, but says that each day brings something new to learn, such as the latest trends in online sales, best practices for writing great headlines, or overhauling an ebook. "I copyedit blogs for all of Doubledot's products, including Affilorama [an affiliate marketing/online marketing training portal] and Traffic Travis [an SEO tool], so I apply what I learn while editing to future projects," says Johnson.
Most Memorable Customer Encounter
"One of my favorite projects was redoing an ebook about writing sales copy. I love creating content, but I'm just as passionate about helping others learn to write and communicate better, since it's a skill that's so integral to everything. Getting to contribute to a project all about learning to write better, and getting to geek out a bit about grammar and writing mechanics was an absolute treat. I hope people get something helpful out of it, even if it's just a confidence boost."
View From the Desk
"I work from home. I love natural light, so I'm fortunate that my work space has a giant window that lets in the sun. There's even a fantastic view-a giant oak tree. It's best in the fall, when the leaves start changing colors."
"I am unabashedly geeky, a part of the Harry Potter generation. Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings-I love it all. I'm also learning to sew, and I dabble a bit in graphic design."
If Not Econtent, Then What?
"As a bookworm, of course I wanted to write a spectacular novel; as a geek, I wanted to be the next Tolkien or J.K. Rowling. So maybe I would be writing a novel."
