The company publishes co-branded, customized daily email newsletters in partnership with trade associations, professional societies, and corporations. Founded in 1999, SmartBrief today boasts more than 1 million readers of its various newsletters, which cover 19 different industries for 72 individual partners. The newsletters are subscription-based and ad-supported.

Business Challenge

With dozens of newsletters covering a wide spectrum of industries to produce each day, a reliable, capable text analytics tool is essential for SmartBrief’s news aggregation needs. "One of our main issues is finding the right stories to put in the newsletters every day," says Chris McNeilly, VP of technology for SmartBrief. "We need to be able to find stories on short notice. Because we produce so many newsletters in such a short amount of time, speed is important." SmartBrief has gone through several text analytics vendors, but it has never quite been satisfied with the efficiency of its news aggregation tools.

Vendor of Choice: Lexalytics

Lexalytics is a 5-year-old company that provides text analytics solutions to search technology companies, market research companies, PR firms, and any organization that stands to benefit from its sophisticated entity extraction technology. Based in Amherst, Mass., and led by CEO Jeff Catlin, who has worked with search, classification, and text analytics products and services for more than 15 years, Lexalytics is "founded on the belief that companies are overwhelmed with information and need help eliminating the unnecessary content residing within their data sources," according to the company website.
