Ooyala, Inc., the Mountain View, Calif.-based a provider of video platform applications and services, announced that it has raised more than $22 million in a round of financing from new and existing investors. The round was led by The CID Group and ITOCHU Technology Ventures; current Ooyala investors Sierra Ventures and Rembrandt Venture Partners were also included.

Telestream, a provider of digital media and workflow tools, completed its acquisition of Anystream, an organization specializing in video production and management. In an announcement, Telestream said that the acquisition significantly improves the company's standing in the video transcoding market, in addition to enhancing its ability to create on-demand workflow applications.

AOL is purchasing locational social networking service Rally Up for an undisclosed amount. Rally Up, which was founded in 2009, develops mobile applications for the iPad and iPhone that allow users to check in to various locations, send messages, and locate friends. The service features a friend feed that lets users share their location or upload text and photos. The service also features integration with Facebook.

Apple announced an array of new features and updates for existing items in its product line, including updated versions of the iPod Nano and iPod Touch, as well as new features for its popular iTunes platform. According to Apple, iTunes 10 now features a social media component called Ping that will allow users to follow specific artists and friends in much the same was as Facebook and Twitter.

According to TechCrunch, Etsy, a community website that allows users to buy and sell handmade creations, has raised an extra $20 million in its fifth venture round, led by Index Ventures. This development gives Etsy a premoney valuation of just under $300 million, roughly triple the valuation it received in its last $27 million round in January 2008.

IBM and the European Union (EU) have expanded their research partnership called IMPACT (IMProving ACcess to Text), which will enable the digitization of rare and culturally significant historical texts, to include more than two-dozen national libraries, research institutions, companies, and universities across Europe. IMPACT, funded by EU, offers guidance and new technology to various European institutions.

EBSCO Publishing has added text-to-speech functionality to EBSCOhost databases by embedding Texthelp Systems' SpeechStream toolbar. Aimed at users ranging from English language learners to people with vision impairments, the SpeechStream toolbar allows text to be read aloud by a computerized voice whose accent-American, British, or Australian-can be set by the individual.

Google rolled out a new Gmail feature that allows users of the web-based email service to place calls directly to any phone. The company reported that calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free "for at least the rest of the year," with calls to other countries falling under the same rates as those applied to the Google Voice service.
