What will the internet look like in 10 or 20 years? While this is an unanswerable question, it doesn't stop the speculation. Policies pursued (or not pursued) by governments, especially in the U.S., will go a long way toward shaping tomorrow's internet. Recently, several scholars were asked to contribute essays for a special issue of the journal Critical Studies in Media Communication. In the issue, The Future of Internet Policy, the authors are very critical of the U.S. government's handling of the internet and present varying policy solutions for making tomorrow's internet more equitable.

The number of mobile apps-and consumers who use them on a regular basis-has increased tremendously. A rash of reports suggest app download numbers will continue to break records and hit somewhere between 200 billion and 270 billion in 2017, up from between 70 billion and 100 billion in 2013. Add to that the latest comScore report, which states mobile apps account for more than 50% of all digital media consumption, and it's little wonder that content companies are lining up to launch or revamp their mobile app.

For the two networks airing the tournament, Univision and ESPN, the matches are setting viewership records. The networks netted a combined average of 7.5 million viewers during the first 11 matches. During the opening match of the tournament, the two networks drew a larger average audience than any World Cup opener in the past 20 years. For the match between the U.S. and Ghana, the average audience across both networks was the second largest for a U.S. opening-round match in history. The largest was in 2010, but that match was aired on a Saturday on ABC, whereas this time it was on a Monday and in English on ESPN.

My favorite part of any do-it-yourself show is the demolition. "Get all your aggression out," the bubbly host proclaims just before the token newlywed fumbles with the sledgehammer. I'm not alone because every one of these shows dedicates a segment to displaying a plume of dust. After all, you can't appreciate the shiny new kitchen if you don't show the studs and decaying wallpaper first. Why don't we extend the same logic to the new content we create on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis?

Technically, I'm still in the coveted 18- to 34-year-old marketing demographic. I've got another couple of years before all you marketers stop fighting so hard for my attention (and my dollars). From a purely practical point of view, I've never understood the clamor for youth dollars-mostly because they don't have any money. Sure, they're wanton spenders, but they don't have much money to begin with. And I'm not the only one who calls into question the time-honored tradition of chasing 18 to 34 year olds. According to a post on Villing & Company's blog, "By 2010, 50 percent of all consumer spending in America will be by people over the age of 50." In fact, that 50-plus age demographic already outspends the 18-34 group by more than $1 trillion per year. That's a lot of money.
