An international coalition, led by MovieLabs, CableLabs, Comcast, and Rovi Corporation, is launching the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR), a non-profit global independent registry that provides a uniform approach to cataloging movies, television shows, and other commercial audio/video assets with unique IDs. The group is also supported by Deluxe, Universal Pictures, Neustar, Paramount Pictures, Sonic Solutions, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and a host of other major entertainment companies.

Creative Commons released the Public Domain Mark, a tool that enables works free of known copyright restrictions to be labeled in a way that clearly communicates that status to the public. The Mark is designed to make it clear to teachers, students, artists, and scientists that they are free to re-use indicated material.

IODA will be provided with HFA's Administration Services, a collection of end-to-end services focusing on rights management.

IBM announced plans to acquire OpenPages, a Massachusetts-based developer of corporate risk management and compliance software. According to IBM, playing a role in the acquisition plans is a recent company study of 1900 global CFOs and senior finance leaders that revealed that risk management has risen in priority by 93% since 2005.

News Corp. announced the acquisition of Skiff, an electronic reading platform developed by the Hearst Corporation. Financial terms of the Skiff acquisition were not disclosed, but come on the heels of News Corp.'s continued moves towards monetizing its digital content.
