In order to keep up with the challenges and emerging needs of business organizations, ClearStory Systems has introduced PowerDeck, a new addition to the company’s suite of solutions for managing digital assets.

Most companies start small, hoping to attract a bigger clientele as they grow. ClearStory is trying a different approach with its recent launch of ActiveMedia Essentials, a hosted, browser-based digital assets management package that targets smaller companies and departments that want to manage their digital media assets with the same security and usability that the major companies have come to expect from ClearStory’s ActiveMedia Enterprise software.

People archive all the time and don’t even realize it, much less realize its value. For instance, a mother may want to have records about her son who recently enlisted in the Army. Her pride may cause her to keep track of his accomplishments, yet these records will take on profound importance if he loses his life fighting in Iraq. We often do not grasp the importance of archiving until a major event in history shows us why we should stay connected with the past.

Nearly a decade ago, Margaret Bodde, co-executive director of the Film Foundation, began having a discussion with Martin Scorsese about how best to teach film to a broader audience than simply those studying film in college. “We started to see that if kids aren’t introduced or exposed to films from the past, they’d have no motivation to protect them for the future,” explains Bodde, so the Film Foundation was established with the express purposes of preserving film and educating the public.

Digital content storage is big and dumb. To effectively do more than sit and store, it requires layers of complexity on top of its simple archival core. But the evolution of digital content has changed our expectations: We don’t just want to keep content, we want to access it, collaborate on it, and re-use it. Thus, stuffing assets away in some big box won’t do and if getting to it has to be a high-level IT function, then what happens to the goals of building a broader user base?

As increasingly rich digital media becomes a regular part of consumers' information diet, it also becomes a more important aspect of business operations. Effective asset management helps organizations of all types make the most of their digital assets.

Managing rich media is no longer just an issue faced by entertainment companies; it is becoming a widespread enterprise content management problem, with rich media files entering the enterprise content repository in ever-growing megabytes. Organizations need to plan for managing these assets to maximize their overall content management initiatives.

As digital asset collections grow, it becomes increasingly important to build a digital asset management system (DAM) with strong classification, taxonomy, and search components to help you locate an asset whenever you need it. Yet digital assets present a unique search problem, requiring a strategy all its own.
By Ron Miller - May 2006 Issue, Posted 02 May 2006
DAM has experienced slower-than-expected growth, in part because of the perception that DAM limits access, rather than the reality—that it expands access. Effective strategies for implementing and using DAM are emerging, particularly in various vertical markets. Within verticals—regardless of differing needs and challenges—the demand for simplified, universal access drives adoption.

What we think we know about digital asset management and collaboration by teams using rich media assets constantly changes. Today the process differs from only a few years ago due to modern work habits, the economic downturn, and the increased use of outsourced service providers to manage and contribute broadly to projects.

Charles Simonyi is slated to be the fifth day-tripper to visit the International Space Station and plans to document his adventure online with a blog, pictures, an “Ask Charles” forum, and more. I bet there will be a good-size audience for some vicarious thrill riding. On the other hand, despite the novelty of civilian space travel and Simonyi’s cyber-extended nerd entourage, I can’t quite picture whole families huddled around the computer to watch.
