Microsoft Corp. announced three European research partnerships designed to support the European research community with access to cloud computing resources and technical support. The company is launching partnerships with Europe's VENUS-C (Virtual Multidisciplinary EnviroNments USing Cloud Infrastructures) consortium, France's INRIA (National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control), and with the U.K.'s University of Nottingham Horizon Institute.

Attivio's has announced its AIE for SharePoint Integration, a platform that combines diverse information sources in a universal index and links entities from SharePoint and other content to relevant data. AIE also includes search features such as relevancy profiles, document classification, and clustering, as well as text analytics, sentiment analysis, and statistical entity extraction.

VBrick Systems announced that the United States Department of Justice purchased its recently released IP streaming video integration for Microsoft's Lync (formerly known as Office Communicator) and SharePoint products. The integration allows users to communicate via streaming video using these Microsoft products, allowing for a more unified communications experience.

Microsoft Corp. has announced Microsoft Office 365, which brings together Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online, and Lync Online in an always-up-to-date cloud service. With Office 365, people can work together from anywhere on virtually any device, while collaborating with others inside and outside their organization. As part of today's news, Microsoft is also opening a limited beta program for Office 365 in 13 countries and regions; it is expected to be available worldwide next year.

Amid all this news, there is one term we haven't yet heard that will have a large role in this saga as it plays out: e-discovery, which refers to the pretrial action in a lawsuit where parties can request or compel digital documents as evidence.
