You probably read Medium, but you may not know it. The blogging platform (of sorts) is the brainchild of Twitter co-founder Ev Williams. Up until now, it has focused on giving anyone the free and easy-to-use tools needed to publish to the web--only without the pressure of maintaining and regularly posting to a blog. It also promotes interactivity from readers-letting them highlight passages, and become a part of the conversation in the comments. Now, though, Medium is taking aim at Wordpress-and other WCM systems--and trying to entice publishers to its service.

In 2015, I did something, well, a little weird. I bought a Barnes & Noble membership. There is a store just minutes from my house, and I realized that I'd been spending a lot of time and money there during the past year-whether on tea in the cafe or on books-and if I had a $25 membership, it would have more than paid for itself. (Members get discounts on pretty much everything.) I finally caved when I found a new John Irving hardcover on the shelves. Usually, I wait for paperbacks, but as a longtime Irving fan (who had been struggling through some books that weren't exactly page-turners), I just couldn't wait.

Writing a book is an excellent way to gain attention as an expert in your field. But writing a book is also an incredible way to learn more about your topic and the many ways there are to explain it to others. I learned this lesson firsthand. Ann Rockley, Charles Cooper, and I recently wrote Intelligent Content: A Primer. It was produced to help introduce the concept of intelligent content, explain the basics, provide a few examples, and explore the benefits available to those who implement the approach.
