A panel of the world's leading advertisers and marketers affirmed the tremendous importance of data to their efforts, kicking off the premier edition of a study. More than 80% of its worldwide research panel (including over 3,000 advertisers, marketers, service providers and technology developers across 17 countries) said that data plays an affirmatively important role in supporting their respective efforts. Nearly all (92.2%) said they expect data to contribute in a more substantial manner to their advertising and marketing efforts over the coming years.

Yesterday morning I jumped on Facebook to see what my friends had been up to over the weekend. There were a few fun posts, some pictures of autumn foliage and apple picking, a couple inspirational quotes or article links. And then, with little warning, I scrolled through at least six or seven ads in my newsfeed, one after the other. I had been shopping online the day before, and it seemed that everything I'd searched for was now showing up on my favorite social media site. A 15% off coupon for a yoga mat, a buy one get one free promotion for shoes, etc. When did Facebook turn into a giant billboard?

Social media content can influence purchase decisions, but its role often goes uncredited since posts and tweets aren't usually the last click before a sale. A surprising 54% of businesses spent less than $1 million on digital marketing in 2013, per the results of a recent study by SEMPO and Econsultancy; additionally, the study revealed that almost half of digital marketing budgets were spent on search-with 31% on paid search and 18% on SEO. Other top areas where digital marketing dollars were allocated included email (18%), digital display (13%t), and social media (11%). Many industry professionals, like Michael Baliber, senior vice president and director of media strategy for ID Media, are surprised by the SEMPO survey results.
