A large chunk of ad spending is already being done programmatically. eMarketer predicts programmatic will make up 67% of total digital display ad spending, or $21.55 billion, in 2016. That's up from 2015, when it accounted for 59% of spending, or $15.43 billion, according to the researchers. The figures include programmatic buying for banners, rich media, video, sponsorship, and additional ad units showing on desktops, tablets, mobile, and other internet-connected devices. Programmatic advertising is creeping into more forms of media too, including television and radio.

Kenshoo, an agile marketing provider, released its latest Mobile App Advertising Trends Report, benchmarking key metrics for mobile app marketers. Among the key findings, total spending increased 155% year-over-year (YoY), while mobile app installs increased 196% YoY, resulting in an overall decrease in the cost per install (-14%) YoY.

The majority of enterprise-level companies have a content strategy. However, almost half aren't using buyer personas to generate demand, and about 50% don't design content to target buyers' pain points, a recent survey of B2B marketers found. "2015 Enterprise B2B Demand Generation Research Study," conducted by the demand-generation firm, ANNUITAS, focuses on companies in the B2B space with more than 2,000 employees and at least $250 million in revenue.

Opera Mediaworks, a mobile advertising and marketing platform announced a new partnership with Unacast to provide beacon and proximity data for retargeting at scale to the world's top advertisers. Until now, the advertising industry has relied heavily on GPS data, which is only available when users are outdoors and actively using their mobile devices. Beacon data is generally far more accurate than GPS, registering consumer behavior down to a precise aisle, shelf, or product.

Retale, a location-based mobile platform that helps shoppers save on purchases from retailers and brands, announced the results of a commissioned study examining ad blocker adoption on PC and mobile devices. 500 adults across the U.S. were polled for this study between January 18-25, 2016. According to the results, 57% of those surveyed said that they use an ad blocker to prevent viewing display ads while on a PC.

Despite its importance to consumers, email is falling behind social media when it comes to customer service, with UK brands answering just 38% of emailed questions, according to a new study. Twitter (48% success rate) and Facebook (44%) are both more accurate and faster at delivering responses, although a lack of consistency between channels is undermining the overall customer experience. Overall, across email, the web, and Twitter, brands were only able to correctly answer 51% of questions that were put to them.

A provider of automated internet data services, Snowcap Data announced Leadbird, a new platform targeting the 22 million small and medium businesses with a low-cost, lead generation toolkit to further drive revenue. Leadbird says it is the first internet-based platform aggregating real-time "trigger-based" leads for SMBs to create marketing campaigns. By aggregating data files on a hyper-local basis, small and medium business owners now have access to the same data as big companies to efficiently target new customers through a self-serve platform.

Qubit, which helps deliver data-first customer experiences, announced a $40m Series C investment led by Goldman Sachs Merchant Banking Division, with participation from Sapphire Ventures, and previous investors Accel and Salesforce Ventures. The funding will enable Qubit to more than double its engineering capability and help the leading digital experience management company to continue its growth trajectory. With this funding round, the company has received a total of $76m funding to date.

The Google ad experience as we know it is changing. The search giant will no longer serve text ads in the right rail of search results. Instead, text ads will appear above and/or below search results. Additionally, users can expect an extra ad-four instead of three-above the search results for what Google calls "highly commercial queries." Collective Bias, a provider of shopper-focused influencer marketing, revealed new data from its Time on Content feature, an indicator of the relevancy and quality of influencer content. Through Time on Content, the company found that consumers view their influencer content for an average duration of two minutes and eight seconds, which is almost seven times longer than the digital display ad average of 19.2 seconds based on viewability standards as measured by Moat Analytics. During the holidays, time spent with influencer content increased to two minutes and 21 seconds.
