Door Step School of India added a new School on Wheels bus, its seventh, to serve more children in Pune. Door Step School provides education for underprivileged children in both Pune and Mumbai. Each bus is equipped as a classroom, able to accommodate 20 to 25 children. This bus was donated by Springer Science+Business Media.

Netflix will split into two brands: Netflix for streaming, and Qwikster for DVD rental, according to CEO Reed Hastings. As reported on paidContent, the company announced it would be separating the two services and increasing subscription cost earlier this summer, but was criticized for lack of adequate communication on the matter.

According to a recent survey of 600 publishers across the trade, professional, and educational markets, the biggest struggle publishers face is maximizing ebook profits as the industry struggles to go digital. Part of the profit problem will be solved as publishers reduce production expenses by moving to scalable digital workflows, rather than retrofitting existing, outdated and inefficient publishing processes. While saving money by increasing productivity and reducing expenses is an important part of gaining a positive return on investment from ebooks and apps, maximizing profits also requires publishers to find innovative ways of earning revenue and turning those dollars into profit.One such strategy is to sell advertisements in ebooks and apps.Ads in books? Heresy you say! Err, not so fast.

Tablet devices have become increasingly popular with both adults and children, with about 15 million iPads sold in 2010 and Kindle being Amazon.com, Inc.'s top-selling product. When ebooks began to boom and etextbooks hit the market, HMH didn't want to get left behind its competitors. In May 2010, HMH began to conceptualize its first etextbook project. It needed to figure out a way to appropriately and effectively present traditional paperback textbooks in digital app form so that they would engage users.

It stands to reason that the content demands of a niche audience are limited, because audience members only need content and services related to a specific subject matter or industry and nothing more. OverDrive launched the free OverDrive Media Console app for Windows Phone. The app will give readers at 15,000 public, school, and corporate libraries the ability to download ebooks and audiobooks directly to their Windows Phone. Users can use the app to find a library that offers digital books, and then download EPUB ebooks as well as MP3 audiobooks.

The new program uses real-time consumer demand, retail inventory requirements, and demand forecasting to enable O'Reilly to shift its traditional business model from inventory-based approach to an on-demand model.

Elearning marketplace OpenSesame announced a new philanthropic partnership with LINGOs (Learning in Non Governmental Organizations), a global consortium of humanitarian organizations. The company plans to work with LINGOs to use the OpenSesame community of elearning buyers and sellers to donate courses and services to LINGOs member organizations. OpenSesame hopes to develop additional elearning resources for LINGOs members and bring more attention to LINGOs' mission.

New research released by Publishing Technology at BML's annual Books & Consumers Conference found that a third of UK trade publishers surveyed predict that over 10% of their total book revenue will come from ebooks by 2012. The research project was conducted by BML and aimed to survey a selection of hand-picked senior executives at top publishers in the UK publishing industry.

Interactive tablet editions of Better Homes and Gardens, Fitness, and Parents are currently available for the iPad, and Meredith plans to expand to other tablet devices, including Android devices.

The University System of Ohio and Flat World Knowledge have teamed up for a joint pilot program that will allow 1,000 Ohio students to receive digital textbooks for free. Faculty in the pilot who select Flat World textbooks for their courses, and agree to participate in a research project focused on student learning, can offer their students free access to the Flat World Knowledge suite of digital learning materials and low-cost access to print textbooks.
