Last December, WikiLeaks stirred up debate when it, once again, released sensitive government documents to the world. Julian Assange, WikiLeaks' editor-in-chief, quickly became a public enemy, and the story brought up a wide range of issues about the role of journalists, governments, and the freedom of the press. The leak, however, also raised the question of just what a publication is in the eyes of the government and if press freedom should extend to web-only publications, especially when they may not be based in the U.S. (or anywhere else, in this case).

The University System of Ohio and Flat World Knowledge have teamed up for a joint pilot program that will allow 1,000 Ohio students to receive digital textbooks for free. Faculty in the pilot who select Flat World textbooks for their courses, and agree to participate in a research project focused on student learning, can offer their students free access to the Flat World Knowledge suite of digital learning materials and low-cost access to print textbooks.

MarkLogic Corporation announced that its database is now being used to help power the content platform of Zinio, which according to the company is the world's largest digital newsstand. Zinio, allows consumers to get instant access, search, and organization for millions of digital news and entertainment articles. According to the companies, MarkLogic was selected because of its ability to scale to large datasets, as well as the ability to rapidly perform searches.

AOL announced that it has completed its acquisition of news and opinion web newspaper The Huffington Post for $315 million. AOL will integrate The Huffington Post with AOL Media and AOL Local, resulting in the formation of the Huffington Post Media Group, a source of news, opinion, entertainment, community, and digital information.

Cengage Learning unveiled its new MindTap line of digital products and services for students at the annual TED conference. The platform is designed to engage students through interactivity while simultaneously offering instructors a choice in content, platforms, devices, and learning tools. MindTap is device agnostic, giving students access to their course materials on desktops, laptops, tablets, or mobile phones.

WoodWing Software announced that it now supports publishing on the newly introduced HP TouchPad tablet, which runs on the HP webOS platform. During the HP Tablet product launch, the publishing capabilities of WoodWing's software were demonstrated through digital editions of Time Magazine, PEOPLE Magazine, and Sports Illustrated that were created with the software.

Quark announced the April 2011 launch of QuarkXPress 9, the newest version of the graphic design and page-layout software. QuarkXPress 9 allows users to publish directly to digital devices without the use of programming code, in addition to supporting print, web and Flash media publishing.

Access Intelligence will be closing a deal on Feb. 18, to acquire Red 7 Media, producer of event industry brands such as EXPO, Event Marketer, Event Design, and Best Events. AI also recently purchased OR Manager, a media brand and events company targeting OR doctors and managers. Red 7's brands will form a new division in AI, dubbed the Media and Event Marketing Group. The division will be overseen by Kerry Smith, founder and president of Red 7. Smith will also become an SVP at AI.

AOL Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire The Huffington Post for $315 million, the news, analysis, and lifestyle website founded in 2005, which now counts nearly 25 million unique monthly visitors.The new group will have a combined base of 117 million unique visitors a month in the United States and 270 million around the world. Following the close of this transaction, AOL will accelerate its strategy to deliver a scaled and differentiated array of premium news, analysis, and entertainment produced by thousands of writers, editors, reporters, and videographers around the globe.

Really Strategies announced the launch of RSuite Cloud, a web-based editorial and production system for automated multilingual publishing to print, web, and ebook formats. RSuite Cloud is a hosted end-to-end content management and publishing system that lets book publishers to create, manage, and distribute single-source content to multiple channels. The system also provides language translation tools to publish in 70 languages.

Oxygen combines author features such as the CSS-driven Visual XML editor with an XML development environment. All eyes are on Las Vegas this week as the shiny, new tech toys for 2011 are being unveiled at International CES, held January 6-9. One company launching its products at the show is Live Editions, which provides a range of professional digital publishing products and services that let publishers and information-intensive organizations publish rich, interactive multimedia ebooks or "live editions." The company debuted its products at the Lunch at Piero's media event January 6 and 7."Our solutions enable our clients to repurpose their content by automatically transforming documents into interactive enhanced ePubs, creating new revenue opportunities and leverage their existing content assets," says co-founder Eric Kmiec.

Children's publishing company Scholastic, Inc. released online learning resource TrueFlix, which includes digitized nonfiction titles from the Children's Press book series True Books. With the tool, teachers in grades 3-5 can help build students' subject content knowledge in science and social studies. Forty-seven titles to date have been digitized with more to come; topics range from climate change and black holes to the Declaration of Independence.

The OASIS open standards consortium announced that its members have approved Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) version 1.2. DITA defines XML architecture for designing, writing, managing, and publishing information in print and on the web. It is used for books, technical manuals, help files, training, and multimedia authoring.

Amazon announced that its Kindle for the Web app will enable users to buy and read full Kindle books—no download or installation required. Bookstores and other retailers, authors, bloggers, and other website owners will be able to offer their readers the full text of Kindle books from their sites and will earn referral fees through the Amazon Associates Program for sales made through their sites. Website owners can embed the Kindle for the Web widget to offer Kindle books.

Quark has partnered with IXIASOFT to integrate Quark XML Author for Microsoft Word into DITA CMS, IXIASOFT's content management software designed to manage the entire DITA documentation process. Quark XML Author is an XML authoring and editing add-in for Word that allows anyone using Word to create or edit XML content.
