Springer Science+Business Media launched SpringerReference.com, a new platform for researchers and both academic and corporate libraries. The site offers editions of Springer's e-references well in advance of their print editions across every subject. Scientists can use the platform to submit updates to articles whenever they want. SpringerReference.com is designed to offer a way to quickly publish major reference works, which need to be constantly updated.

LYRASIS expanded its Mass Digitization Collaborative by partnering with Digital Conversion Solutions (DCS), a division of the HF Group, and by furthering its existing partnership with Creekside Digital. The Mass Digitization Collaborative allows LYRASIS member libraries to digitize books, serials, and newspapers for a low fee, and the expansion is opening the offering to other formats.

The Library of Congress collaborated with the Facing Change: Documenting America photography group to archive and publish a new documentary photography project. Work from the Farm Security Administration, a federal project that documented the American experience of the Great Depression and World War II across all economic levels, will now be available through the Library of Congress.

OverDrive launched the free OverDrive Media Console app for Windows Phone. The app will give readers at 15,000 public, school, and corporate libraries the ability to download ebooks and audiobooks directly to their Windows Phone. Users can use the app to find a library that offers digital books, and then download EPUB ebooks as well as MP3 audiobooks.

Quark released Quark XML Author 4.0 for Microsoft Word, Quark's add-on for Microsoft Word that lets users create structured XML content. Quark XML Author 4.0 introduces new usability features, enhanced DITA mapping features, and an optional module for publishing to the DITA Open Toolkit. Quark XML Author 4.0 also supports Microsoft Office 2010.

SAGE announced that it would be working with the HighWire Mobile Web interface to format its entire collection of online journal sites for mobile. When accessing a SAGE journal site on iPhones, Androids or other smartphones, viewers will be automatically redirected to the mobile version.

EBSCO Publishing merged with the H.W. Wilson Company to improve discovery services for libraries. EBSCO databases will have enhanced indexing because the Wilson controlled vocabularies will be integrated into EBSCO's controlled vocabularies. Subscribers of Wilson databases will be able to search the EBSCO Discovery Service for all Wilson indexing, abstracts, and full text.

The Financial Times has launched a new, faster and automatically updating app available directly through a web browser at app.ft.com. The FT is the first major news publisher to launch an app of this type, which will allow readers to access its journalism across a broad range of tablet and smartphone devices.

During a trip down to the Information Today, Inc. offices, I listened to one of my favorite new-to-me podcasts: the Slate Audio Book Club. It's been a long time since I was in a literature class where I argued the merits of Toni Morrison's Beloved or gushed about To Kill a Mockingbird, and I miss it. Moreover, I loved the convenience of using what could have been a tedious 3-hour car trip to let the folks at Slate tackle David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest for me because I just don't know if I have that kind of reading stamina.

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc and Faber and Faber Limited announced a new partnership to develop a digital content platform for libraries, educators, students and researchers to be sold via subscription and perpetual access to academic institutions. Drama Online, launching in October 2012, is an online resource for plays, critical analysis, and performance.

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc announced the establishment of a new digital global publisher, Bloomsbury Reader. Bloomsbury Reader will publish books currently unavailable in print where all English-language rights have already reverted to the author or the author's estate and where there is no edition currently in print. Bloomsbury Reader is a digital imprint, since all the books will be sold as ebooks or via print-on-demand.

InTech, a multidisciplinary open access (OA) publisher with a focus on book publishing, employed TBI Communications Ltd., to conduct a survey to discern the varying attitudes about OA, and made the results available. Of InTech's author-base of 25,000, more than 8,000 authors (32%) responded, with the majority of respondents (78%) identifying themselves as researchers.
