Etextbook publisher Kno is adding the ability for users to view their textbooks through a web-based reader, along with a number of other additions to the company's iPad app. Users will now be able to transfer notes, images, and highlights from their textbooks to a digital journal, and can construct quizzes for themselves by blacking out text.

Platinum Equity announced the acquisition of Quark, a developer of design and publishing software for businesses. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. According to the company, the acquisition will benefit Quark by providing them with Platinum's expertise in mergers and acquisitions, as well as market strategy.

The Harry Potter fan and ebook website Pottermore.com, which officially launches to the public in October, began a contest on July 31 to grant 1 million winners access to the beta site. As part of the "Magical Quill" contest, a clue will be posted on the Pottermore homepage each day for a week. Those who solve the clue then have the opportunity to register for early access to the site. A limited number of people can register each day, and the Pottermore site and @Pottermore Twitter account will indicate when registration for the day has come to a close.

Interim results from the first half of 2011 reveal that the Financial Times increased its audience and attracted more paying subscribers across all channels. As of June 2011, customers that subscribe to FT.com increased by 34% and the total number of registered users for the site grew to more than 3.7 million. This increase in registered users reflects a 49% growth compared to 2010.

As part of its shift in strategy following its acquisition of the Huffington Post, AOL is closing several of its main content sites in the UK, according to a report by paidContent. The internet company plans to shut down operations for its AOL Music and FanHouse operations in the UK, following similar closures and consolidations in its US operations.

Apple is enforcing its new in-app subscription rules for ereader apps, which require that apps be stripped of links to external sites for purchasing digital books or subscriptions. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo have since complied with the new terms, removing links to their bookstores from their iOS apps.

Google announced a partnership with JK Rowling's upcoming Pottermore website to help distribute the author's ebooks to users in the U.S. on the Google eBooks platform. When the site launched this fall, the bestselling novel series will be available for purchase and import into the Google Books cloud library, as well as to a variety of other ereading platforms.

Future Publishing, which publishers a variety of magazines such as T3, Total Film, and Guitar World, will be selling or closing several of its print titles and laying off 100 staff as part of a shift to focus primarily on digital publishing instead of print. According to a report in the Guardian, the titles being closed or sold include DVD & Blu-Ray Review, Home Cinema Choice, and Photoshop Focus Guides.

Amazon is debuting a program to allow students to rent textbooks in digital format for their Kindle devices at up to 80% off the list price of the print textbook. Students can choose rental lengths of between 30 and 360 days and pay only for the time they need the textbook, and also have the option to extend rental periods on a daily basis, if need be. The service will give students access to the content on PC, Mac, Kindle, or other mobile device, and will also be able to store highlights, notes, and annotations for access across devices.

The iriver Story HD e-reader arrives in stores on July 17 for $139.99, and will be the first e-reader integrated with the open Google eBooks platform. The Story allows users to browse, buy, and read Google eBooks on the e-reader through Wi-Fi. It features a high resolution HD E Ink screen and a keyboard.

Springer will take over the backlist of around 15 books from Asia Briefing, and reissue them in updated editions, as well as publish five new books each year. Cynopsis was founded by TV business veteran Cynthia Turner in 1997, and publishes the daily flagship Cynopsis, which covers the TV industry, as well as Cynopsis Digital, Cynopsis Kids and Cynopsis Sports, with nearly 150,000 subscribers in 53 countries.
