According to a report in the New York Observer, digital retail giant Amazon.com is coming under scrutiny by some in the publishing world for a system by which it offers extra promotion as an incentive for published authors to provide review blurbs for books on its Amazon Publishing imprint.

News Corp. announced that it has found a buyer for ailing social network Myspace. The network will be acquired by Specific Media, a digital media and advertising agency, for a rumored $35mil. The network was placed up for sale earlier this year by owner News Corp., which purchased the network in 2006 for approximately $580 million. As part of the deal, News Corp. has also taken a minority equity stake in Specific Media.

OverDrive announced that Thomas Nelson, Encyclopedia Britannica, Crabtree Publishing, and Lonely Planet will provide simultaneous access ebooks to OverDrive's global network, enabling libraries and schools to provide "always available" ebooks without waiting lists or holds.

eTeacher's thousands of students come from more than 100 countries worldwide, with many different native tongues. Because of this, each school's site also needs to be translated into multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, Russian, and German, in order to effectively function for its target audiences. This has resulted in eTeacher essentially maintaining nearly 20 websites worth of content.

You, like millions of other people, have fallen under the spell of simple, but compelling (and not to mention free) online game.For an increasing amount of people, it seems playing a game while visiting a website is almost an expectation. In fact, according to a Saatchi & Saatchi report titled "Engagement Unleashed: Gamification for Business, Brands, and Loyalty", 54% of male US internet users play a social game daily-with 46% of women following suit. Games keep users coming back for more. This isn't lost on web publishers.

Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest LLC, and Elsevier announced that the full-text of SciVerse ScienceDirect content will be indexed within Serials Solutions' Summon web-scale discovery service. Once the indexing is complete, researchers will be able to search the full text of all ScienceDirect journal articles and ebooks via the Summon service.

OverDrive announced that booksellers, libraries, and schools in its global network will be able to access 1,500 DRM-free ebook titles from O'Reilly Media. The publisher's entire ebook catalog will be available to OverDrive's channel partners, including those in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other territories. Bestselling ebooks on computer technologies available through the distribution agreement will include iPad 2: The Missing Manual, Head First Java, and Windows 7: Up & Running.

Springer Science+Business Media launched SpringerReference.com, a new platform for researchers and both academic and corporate libraries. The site offers editions of Springer's e-references well in advance of their print editions across every subject. Scientists can use the platform to submit updates to articles whenever they want. SpringerReference.com is designed to offer a way to quickly publish major reference works, which need to be constantly updated.

LYRASIS expanded its Mass Digitization Collaborative by partnering with Digital Conversion Solutions (DCS), a division of the HF Group, and by furthering its existing partnership with Creekside Digital. The Mass Digitization Collaborative allows LYRASIS member libraries to digitize books, serials, and newspapers for a low fee, and the expansion is opening the offering to other formats.

The Library of Congress collaborated with the Facing Change: Documenting America photography group to archive and publish a new documentary photography project. Work from the Farm Security Administration, a federal project that documented the American experience of the Great Depression and World War II across all economic levels, will now be available through the Library of Congress.

OverDrive launched the free OverDrive Media Console app for Windows Phone. The app will give readers at 15,000 public, school, and corporate libraries the ability to download ebooks and audiobooks directly to their Windows Phone. Users can use the app to find a library that offers digital books, and then download EPUB ebooks as well as MP3 audiobooks.

Quark released Quark XML Author 4.0 for Microsoft Word, Quark's add-on for Microsoft Word that lets users create structured XML content. Quark XML Author 4.0 introduces new usability features, enhanced DITA mapping features, and an optional module for publishing to the DITA Open Toolkit. Quark XML Author 4.0 also supports Microsoft Office 2010.

SAGE announced that it would be working with the HighWire Mobile Web interface to format its entire collection of online journal sites for mobile. When accessing a SAGE journal site on iPhones, Androids or other smartphones, viewers will be automatically redirected to the mobile version.

EBSCO Publishing merged with the H.W. Wilson Company to improve discovery services for libraries. EBSCO databases will have enhanced indexing because the Wilson controlled vocabularies will be integrated into EBSCO's controlled vocabularies. Subscribers of Wilson databases will be able to search the EBSCO Discovery Service for all Wilson indexing, abstracts, and full text.

The Financial Times has launched a new, faster and automatically updating app available directly through a web browser at app.ft.com. The FT is the first major news publisher to launch an app of this type, which will allow readers to access its journalism across a broad range of tablet and smartphone devices.

During a trip down to the Information Today, Inc. offices, I listened to one of my favorite new-to-me podcasts: the Slate Audio Book Club. It's been a long time since I was in a literature class where I argued the merits of Toni Morrison's Beloved or gushed about To Kill a Mockingbird, and I miss it. Moreover, I loved the convenience of using what could have been a tedious 3-hour car trip to let the folks at Slate tackle David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest for me because I just don't know if I have that kind of reading stamina.
