Hearst Magazines has not shied away from this challenge, making it a priority to keep up with its technology-driven readership by creating both websites and mobile sites for its brands and their content. Editors are not known for embracing change. So when Ebyline surveyed editors to see how social media and SEO have changed their jobs, it's no surprise that many still valued the basics of good journalism over other concerns.According to Ebyline original reporting, depth/expertise, and exclusivity topped the list of content success factors followed by publication title and presentation. At the bottom of the editors' list were social media value, author byline, and SEO-which, to many web-focused audiences, may seem counterintuitive.

But in light of the e-reader revolution, the great literary debate arose: is the book beyond improvement?I have come to believe that the argument is more philosophically stimulating than truly helpful in the process of content creation. What we have before us is not a matter of improvement, but evolution. We're talking about technology after all. The enhanced ebook may be a bird of a different feather but it still needs two good wings if it's going to fly: a smooth user experience and, of course, a compelling story.

The world is full of blandness. We are guilty of constantly manufacturing for the lowest common denominator. Our culture rewards content that has been homogenized, pasteurized, and scrubbed of anything unique. We have copied what our competition is doing until we are blue in the face. The sea of sameness is prevalent across the board; marketing, communications, sales, and our entire organizations are striving for mediocrity. Fresh ideas are stifled by the layers of corporate bureaucracy and rarely see the light of day. So what do we do?

In the digital world, the idea of engagement has a very different meaning. Marketing is no longer a one-way street. Rather, marketers have learned to leverage social media to build two-way conversations in pursuit of that magic word: engagement. Scrolling marquees decorated with hashtags and @ symbols stream across our television screens, encouraging viewers to engage, luring us with the promise of sharing our shout-outs with the world. In the social networking age, companies continuously ask themselves: How do we reach these communities? How do we engage? How do we create valuable conversations?

Be it in the form of a private collection of rare manuscripts to the massive assortment of images, documents, letters, and much more gathered at the grandest public institutions, curation - organizing and maintaining a collection -- has been around as long as there were things of value and places to keep them safe. Yet many of these collections sit in isolation, available to only a privileged few. They also are at risk of damage, deterioration, and even destruction. It is with these issues in mind that Gale, part of Cengage Learning, set about to create its Nineteenth Century Collections Online (NCCO) collection. NCCO brings together rare primary source materials - monographs, newspapers, pamphlets, manuscripts, ephemera, maps, photographs and more - from more than 100 individual collections.

It's a crisp, chilly evening in October. The sun has just set over the mountains in the distance and long, blue shadows are filling the park beside the white gazebo. A few warm street lamps dot the park in Jonesborough, TN, annual home of the International Storytelling Festival. As the last warm colors disappear into the distance, a lone figure steps onto the stage of the gazebo and begins to spin a yarn. I pull the blanket around me a little tighter. From the railroad tracks to the creek, the audience falls silent as the storyteller kicks off the ghost story portion of the festival.
