Ness Computing debuted its personal search engine app in Apple's App Store as a featured app. The free app, called Ness, tailors search results specifically to each user, learning a person's preferences over time and considering friend's recommendations when providing search results.

Gale, part of Cengage Learning announced enhancements to the Gale PowerSearch platform, which offers cross-searching of periodical content, reference content, primary source information, multimedia, and ebooks. The new features include search assist, enhanced results lists, language customizability, expanded content ,and enhanced subject and publication search options, designed to make the search and discovery process more efficient.

After many successful Enterprise Search Summit events in the U.S., Information Today, Inc. (EContent's parent company) is launching Enterprise Search Europe in London. Conference Chair Martin White calls the event noteworthy, because in a world where "search" and "Google" are synonymous, he says, it is important to realize the scale of information retrieval research and of the enterprise search business in Europe.

Five months after its acquisition of ebrary, ProQuest is linking the two companies' search platforms to enable users to discover ebooks in the context of their libraries' ProQuest content and use tools from both environments. The platform is rolling out in libraries around the world, and it adds a flexible technological architecture that lets users look deeper into multiple content sources in multiple formats.

Elsevier expanded its offering to researchers by adding full text from its SciVerse ScienceDirect database to EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) as well as the Ex Libris Primo Central Index. In other Elsevier news, the company expanded its SciVal Funding tool to users in Canada, U.K., and European Union, with plans to expand to Australia, Singapore, South Africa, India, New Zealand, and Ireland by the end of 2011.

ProQuest linked ebrary's search platform to its own, which enables users to discover multiple formats from multiple content sources. Leveraging tools from both platforms, users can discover search results that include ebrary's ebook content along with ProQuest's relevant reports, videos, and articles, and access the full text of the result from either source.

Serials Solutions, a business unit of ProQuest LLC, and Elsevier announced that the full-text of SciVerse ScienceDirect content will be indexed within Serials Solutions' Summon web-scale discovery service. Once the indexing is complete, researchers will be able to search the full text of all ScienceDirect journal articles and ebooks via the Summon service.

ADmantX completed $2.8 million in growth funding from Atlante Ventures Mezzogiorno, the venture capital Fund of Intesa Sanpaolo, an Italian bank. ADmantX designed an advanced semantic page-level analysis that examines reader emotions, behaviors, motivations, and intentions to match ads with similar emotional appeal, without using tracking cookies. The round represents the first outside funding since ADmantX was spun off last year from Expert System.

As a global law firm, Orrick had documents in repositories around the world. If someone at the firm needed to access the information in one of these repositories, he would need to search each one separately until he found the document he was looking for, taking up valuable time and resources. "The document repositories are not really user friendly," says Mark Salamon, senior knowledge analyst at Orrick. "So one of the main things we wanted to accomplish was being able to search all that content at once, and also being able to search it more easily."

The United States Patent and Trademark Office awarded a patent to ProQuest's Deep Indexing, granting the company patent protection on the CSA Illustrata technology. ProQuest extracts and indexes data about graphic objects in journal literature to allow it to be searched as if it were full text. Deep indexing was pioneered in CSA Illustrata, and is now available in the new ProQuest platform.

Commentary from Martin White: About 50 years ago I fell in love with chemistry. I could think of no more interesting subject and spent 3 very enjoyable years at the University of Southampton. It was a time when the department was home to some exceedingly able researchers, and when I crept into the research meetings I heard phrases such as, "We are beginning to think ..." and "It's starting to look as though ..." as new techniques were being developed just down the corridor in the undergraduate labs.

Last spring, Google found itself on the receiving end of a fair amount of consternation from the technology press, privacy advocates, and several European countries. German officials accused the search giant of using its ubiquitous Street View cars to do more than merely snap those unsettling panoramic shots of your house and neighborhood. Those official Google vehicles were also collecting "samples of payload data from WiFi networks," Google admitted in April on its official blog, in response to the accusation.
