The web: It's everywhere. It's a modern miracle. An amazing technological advancement that, when combined with mobile devices and wireless broadband, provides humanity with the promise of a more equitable dispersement of information and wealth...err, hypothetically. Despite the ubiquity of technology and the widespread availability of the mobile web, there are many places in the world where information critical to survival isn't available in a way that's relevant to those who need it. But it doesn't have to be that way. All that's needed is an understanding of the actual problems in need of solving.

In an effort to help scientists go global with their research, Edanz has launched Journal Selector as a part of its Journal Advisor platform. By using Journal Selector, researchers will be able to match an author's non-English research to journals that publish articles on similar topics and can convert the research conducted into English. By converting research into English, Edanz feels researchers will have a much greater chance of getting published.

Springer Science+Business Media agreed to acquire the Wolters Kluwer Pharma Marketing and Publishing Services division (MPS). Springer will add MPS to its Springer Healthcare unit. MPS provides strategic marketing, publishing, and business intelligence products and services to medical libraries, research institutions, and the pharmaceutical industry.

InTech, a multidisciplinary open access (OA) publisher with a focus on book publishing, employed TBI Communications Ltd., to conduct a survey to discern the varying attitudes about OA, and made the results available. Of InTech's author-base of 25,000, more than 8,000 authors (32%) responded, with the majority of respondents (78%) identifying themselves as researchers.

Wolters Kluwer Pharma Solutions announced the addition of a new open access (OA) publishing option for authors submitting original research articles to the Adis line of pharmacology and pharmacotherapy journals. OA articles will only be published online, and are accessible on AdisOnline and Ovid to read, copy, share and distribute for non-commercial purposes. This is the first time in 40 years that the Adis journals will be available without a pay-per-view or subscription model.

An agreement between EBSCO and IGI Global will allow metadata for 131 journals and more than 1,500 reference books to be added to the base index of EDS. IGI Global is an international publishing company that specializes in scholarly research publications and databases. Metadata that will be available via EDS includes IGI Global's peer reviewed journals, which focus on information/computer science and technology applied to business and public administration, engineering, education, medicine and healthcare, and social sciences.
