It wasn't so long ago that I was writing about Facebook Stories as the social media giant's first steps into the content marketing game. Now Facebook is putting an even bigger emphasis on content, with Facebook Paper (check out this video to see what some experts think about the new app). The Flipboard-esque app is, in essence, just a sleeker way to get and share the same content you see in your normal Facebook feed-combined with a news reader.

Interacting Technology, the Israeli born social vertical building platform, announced the worldwide launch of Moovz.com, a social networking platform and mobile application for the gay community. Since its Beta launch in October 2013, Moovz has been available online and on mobile devices worldwide. The platform currently operates in eight different languages and launched with over 25 million interactions by users worldwide.

Facebook wants your eyeballs, and isn't about to let any competitor go unchallenged. This time around, the social media powerhouse has Flipboard in its sights as reports of the impending release of Facebook Paper filter out. According to re/code, Paper could be out sometime this month and will aggregate your news into a Flipboard-like app for mobile users.

Josh Miller, co-founder and CEO of Branch and Potluck, announced on January 14, 2014, that the company has been acquired by Facebook and will be joining the Facebook Conversations group in New York City. Miller says that Facebook has asked the Branch team to build their product at "Facebook scale."

VisualGraph announced on its site that it is now part of Pinterest. VisualGraph is a machine-driven search platform that specializes in visual content. According to the post from founder Kevin Jing, "Our approach is to combine the state-of-the-art machine vision tools, such as object recognition (e.g. shoes, faces), with large-scale distributed search and machine learning infrastructures."

If you turned to Snapchat for the privacy its private, vanishing messaging provided you will be more than a little disappointed to hear the company has been hacked. It started when Gibson Security claimed Snapchat's API was vulnerable. Snapchat responded on its blog by saying there were "theorhetical" dangers, and that it had implemented safeguards to help address book information safe. But then a hacker group responded by posting 4.6 million usernames and phone numbers in a downloadable database-just in time to ring in the new year.

You may have heard a rumor that Facebook is dying. Millennials are supposedly ditching the platform. Because grandparents are flocking to the service others are leaving in droves. Don't believe the hype. To misquote Mark Twain, the rumors of Facebook's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Your goal, like many content creators is clicks, right? Attention, time, trust, affinity. Right? Look no further than Facebook. But (caveat coming) bring your wallet.

In August, the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project released data from its spring tracking survey showing that while there are clearly fewer Hispanic Americans among the total U.S. internet population, these same users are more likely to use social networking sites than non-Hispanics. While 70% of white, non-Hispanic internet users use social networking sites, a whopping 80% of Hispanic internet users use such sites (75% of black, non-Hispanic internet users use social networking sites). In addition, while just 14% of white, non-Hispanic internet users use Twitter, 28% of Hispanic internet users employ the service (27% of black, non-Hispanic internet users use Twitter).

Did you miss your chance to grab up Facebook shares during its initial public offering - or during the stock dump that happened shortly after? Well, you may have another chance...sort of. Facebook, Inc. announced that it is commencing an underwritten registered public offering of 70,000,000 shares of its Class A common stock. Gigom estimates this to be valued at approximately $3.9 billion.

You may have noticed that videos are playing a bigger role in your Facebook newsfeed since September. That's because the social media giant was trying to make the video experience more engaging. The company says it has worked, and so now it is testing video ads. According to Facebook's blog post, "Marketers will be able to use this new format to tell their stories to a large number of people on Facebook in a short amount of time - with high-quality sight, sound and motion."

Many social networks just ignore the protestations of their users when changes to the layout or privacy settings enrage the masses. But when Twitter decided to change its block feature, the outcry from users was heard, and quickly responded to. The change would keep a user from seeing the activity of a user they had blocked -- but would not keep the blocked user from seeing the activity of the person who had blocked them.

If there is one think failing social media marketing, it is a lack of social. I'll explain what I mean by this in a minute, but let's first examine the reality of today's business operations.More and more companies are moving to automated processing and communication to squeeze out operational costs and add a few more margin percentage points. When you call a service provider today to get a problem resolved, do you actually get a human being answering the call? Or, conversely, do you get an automated system that takes you through four levels of questions that get you nowhere and then leave you waiting 15 minutes or longer to get connected to an actual person to help you?

The fact that I don't read a newspaper isn't at all shocking. I read the news on websites like CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and so on, like many, many other people. Recently, though, something about the way I get my news has changed, and it's all because of Facebook.

Topsy has been keeping an archive of all the tweets ever tweeted since the 2006 launch of Twitter -- and now Apple has bought the company for over $200 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. With the acquisition, Apple will have access to the constant stream of real-time data being created by Twitter users.

Ashton Kutcher (aplusk) has more than 15 million Twitter followers. Harvard Biz Review (@HarvardBiz) has 1.2 million. Peggy Anne Salz, founder and chief analyst of MobileGroove has about 4000. EContent Magazine (@econtentmag) has 2600. What does this all mean? Absolutely nothing! Evaluating social media effectiveness based on "the numbers" is like evaluating whether or not the television ads run during the Super Bowl are "good" or "bad." Unless we're privy to the strategy behind them our opinions are pretty much irrelevant. And while many are still enamored with the numbers - of likes, pins, retweets and +1's - the truth is that in social media, as in any form of marketing communication, it's the real results that matter.

The Financial Times has launched a new "gift article" feature for subscribers which simplifies the sharing of articles with their networks. At launch, the service allows FT subscribers to share up to 10 articles per month through email to non-subscribers.
