IBM is set to acquire Unica Corporation, a publicly held marketing software company based in Waltham, Mass. Unica will be acquired by IBM at a rate of $21 per share, or a rough net total of $480 million.

Telestream, a California-based creator of digital media tools and workflow assistance products, has reached an agreement to acquire the Anystream division of Grab Networks. Telestream has stated that this acquisition will further solidify its position in the software video transcoding market.

IBM has announced its acquisition of Datacap, Inc., a private company based in Tarrytown, N.Y. Datacap specializes in software that helps organizations order and streamline the flow of business information in order to reduce hidden costs and errors. IBM intends to make use of Datacap's assets and technologies in order to improve its own ability to help organizations digitize and manage their information.

According to an SEC filing, Demand Media filed for an IPO, listing up to a $125 million stake in the company. The date, share price, number of sales, and how much of the company is actually being put up have not been disclosed.

Professional social networking company LinkedIn announced the acquisition of mSpoke, a startup that develops recommendation technology with offerings for content publishers, research analysts, and individuals. LinkedIn, which, at 75 million users, is the largest networking site of its kind, would not disclose the terms of the transaction.

Open source microblogging developer StatusNet Inc. scored some new investors in a funding round led by FirstMark Capital, along with BOLDstart Ventures, iNovia Capital, and Montreal Start Up. FirstMark venture partner and angel investor Scott Switzer will also be joining the StatusNet board.

Investopedia, a financial information and investing education website owned by Forbes, has been acquired by ValueClick for $42 million in cash. ValueClick, which predicts Investopedia will generate $10 million in revenue for the 2010 financial year, is also assuming certain financial liabilities of its new acquisition.

Japanese mobile service NTT DOCOMO, Inc. announced the acquisition of PacketVideo Corporation, formerly a subsidiary of NextWave Wireless Inc. DOCOMO, which had acquired a 35% stake in the phone-based multimedia company in July 2009, purchased the remaining 65% equity interest in PacketVideo for $111.6 million.

IBM closed on its acquisition of San Mateo, Calif.-based web analytics software company Coremetrics. IBM plans to use Coremetrics' cloud-based technology to expand its business analytics software offerings, as well as the capabilities of its 5,000-person Business Analytics and Optimization Consulting organization.

Workstreamer, a business listening platform secured $3.5 million in funding in a round of Series A funding. The new funds will be used to accelerate the growth of its service, which focuses on monetizing real-time business information. The Association of Electronics, Information Technology and Telecommunications of Spain (AETIC) formed a new initiative on digital content in the interest of improving the Spanish economy's effectiveness in that area and improve collaboration with other areas of industry. The AETIC's new designation comprises nine subsections that totaled €9.2 billion (about $11.5 billion) in production in 2009, or 0.9% of the Spanish GDP.

The Broadband Commission for Digital Development, an organization that includes U.N. agencies, industry voices, and government leaders, released a plan to develop the world's broadband networks. The commission, which is co-chaired by Paul Kagame, president of Rwanda, and Mexican media magnate Carlos Slim, will deliver its findings to U.N. Being the owner of two of the most important e-readers on the market puts me in a unique position to speak to the best and the worst of what e-readers have to offer. In my view, the Kindle - iPad comparisons I have read are usually based on a rather arrogant assumption: that reading books is, somehow, a more worthwhile intellectual pursuit than magazines, newspapers, or other content sources.
