Giesecke & Devrient and Vodafone are developing mobile security applications that employ the SIM card as a key for authentication and encryption, including an application that involves SIM card-based authentication for access to a company network. The pilot projects for these applications were presented at CeBIT 2011, the international information and communications technology trade show hosted in Hannover, Germany, March 1-5 this year.

Kalio Inc., formerly D.M.insite, will introduce an application for mobile ecommerce. The KalioMobile application will unify mobile and online retail sites, because online retailers will not need to create a separate mobile infrastructure. Instead, "customers can manage their mobile site as an extension of their primary website," according to Kalio co-founder and chief executive officer Larry Kavanagh.

According to figures released by DisplaySearch, Apple is now the dominant seller of mobile computers based on units sold, thanks in large part to sales of its popular iPad tablet. The company sold a total of 10.2 million mobile computers (which includes both laptops and tablets) during the fourth quarter of 2010, seizing 17.2% of the total market. Its nearest competitors were HP and Acer, which held shares of 15.6% and 14% respectively.

The company's latest funding round is led by CM Capital and Haag Ltd., both of Australia. The financing comes on the heels of several recently-announced agreements including relationships with Seagate i365, Systemax MISCO Germany, and Computerlinks to distribute Datacastle's endpoint backup and data protection solution - Datacastle RED.
