Elsevier B.V. launched SciVerse Scopus Alerts Individual, an iPhone and Android app for noninstitutional subscribers. The app allows users to peruse the Scopus database, which contains nearly 18,000 journal titles from more than 5,000 international publishers.

Tablet owners are more willing to pay for online content, according to a study by FTI Consulting, Inc., an advisory firm that helps organizations enhance enterprise value. The study, titled "The Effect of Tablets on U.S. Content Consumption," illustrates digital media consumption habits of tablet owners versus smartphone, laptop, or desktop owners.

Springer signed a license agreement with the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, under which they acquire STM titles for SpringerLink. The French bibliographic agency for higher education (ABES) coordinated the agreement, which adds archived articles from more than 1,000 electronic journals and more than 8,500 ebooks.

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) announced that Syngene International, an India-based contract research organization, expanded the access of the CAS SciFinder tool to all scientists at Syngene. The three-year contract provides scientists with unlimited access to SciFinder, a chemistry research tool.

ProQuest's Early European Books program expanded its range to include digitized books from the National Library of the Netherlands and a new installment of content from the National Central Library of Florence. The online service digitally archives rare and early modern printed books from the birth of printing in the 1450s to the year 1700 from European libraries.

EBSCO Publishing established an agreement with Philosophy Documentation Center that will allow users of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) to access scholarly philosophy content. Researchers at institutions that subscribe to both EDS and Philosophy Documentation Center will be able to search for and view the full records of content from Philosophy Documentation Center.

Wiley-Blackwell will partner with The Hastings Center to publish the Hastings Center Report, a journal that covers the bioethics field. Through the partnership, more libraries will be able to access the Hastings Center Report, which publishes essays, commentary, and research articles on the social and ethical issues raised by medical advancements.

ebrary announced the availability of a new ebook collection on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The collection is priced under US$3,000 and offers a perpetual archive package that includes 40 current titles from renowned publishers such as Wiley, Springer, and Taylor & Francis. The ebooks may also be purchased individually, and they are not available in any ebrary subscription product.

As of January 2012, Springer will begin publishing the Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering (CJME), an official Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES) journal. CJME is a peer-reviewed publication, and will join Springer's Chinese Library of Science, a collection of more than 90 China-based international research journals.

The new features include search assist, enhanced results lists, language customizability, expanded content ,and enhanced subject and publication search options, designed to make the search and discovery process more efficient.

Springer is partnering with the Beijing Normal University to launch a fully sponsored open access (OA) journal called International Journal of Disaster Risk Science (IJDRS). The journal will be included in the SpringerOpen portfolio, which allows the journal's contents to be OA immediately, and available on Springer's online platform SpringerLink to anyone with an internet connection.

Cengage Learning completed its acquisition of the National Geographic Society's (NGS) digital and print school publishing unit, creating a new Cengage brand called National Geographic Learning. Cengage acquired extended rights to distribute NGS images, maps, videos, articles, and other content. The National Geographic Science Series, National Geographic Explorer! magazines, and Hampton Brown's literacy and language programs are now assimilated into Cengage's English Language Learning business.

Springer announced the purchase of the Asia Europe Journal from The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), a long-time partner Springer. ASEF will no longer be associated with the journal, which will be relaunched with new editors-in-chief and refocused on its core topics. The journal will further promote discussion on the challenges and opportunities of a common future of Asia and Europe.

Serials Solutions, part of ProQuest LLC, released updated comprehensive lists of key databases and packages of the serials titles and publishers available in the Summon index, a search and discovery service. Serials Solutions intends to provide librarians with transparency into the full-text searchable content indexed in the Summon service.

STM publisher Wiley-Blackwell formed a new partnership beginning in 2012 with the TESOL International Association (TESOL) to publish its two journals, TESOL Quarterly and TESOL Journal, both of which are currently self-published by the association. First published in 1967, TESOL Quarterly publishes papers on topics of signi?cance to individuals concerned with English language teaching and learning.

Five months after its acquisition of ebrary, ProQuest is linking the two companies' search platforms to enable users to discover ebooks in the context of their libraries' ProQuest content and use tools from both environments. The platform is rolling out in libraries around the world, and it adds a flexible technological architecture that lets users look deeper into multiple content sources in multiple formats.

Springer announced its 50th SpringerOpen journal, the International Journal of Disaster Risk Science (IJDRS. The journal focuses on issues in disaster science and risk management and is being fully sponsored by the Beijing Normal University. The open access initiative SpringerOpen was launched one year ago with the goal of expanding open access to more disciplines within the science, technology, and medicine fields. Most of the newly launched SpringerOpen journals derive from the fields of engineering, medicine and mathematics.

Elsevier expanded its offering to researchers by adding full text from its SciVerse ScienceDirect database to EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) as well as the Ex Libris Primo Central Index. In other Elsevier news, the company expanded its SciVal Funding tool to users in Canada, U.K., and European Union, with plans to expand to Australia, Singapore, South Africa, India, New Zealand, and Ireland by the end of 2011.

Springer Science+Business Media launched SpringerReference.com, a new platform for researchers and both academic and corporate libraries. The site offers editions of Springer's e-references well in advance of their print editions across every subject. Scientists can use the platform to submit updates to articles whenever they want. SpringerReference.com is designed to offer a way to quickly publish major reference works, which need to be constantly updated.
