Springer's new open access journal SpringerPlus is an addition to the publishing company's SpringerOpen portfolio, underlining its flexible publication strategy. It is the publisher's first open access journal with a broad interdisciplinary approach covering the entire scientific spectrum.

Springer Science+Business Media has added to its SpringerOpen portfolio with its first open access journal. SpringerPlus will feature interdisciplinary manuscripts describing original research, case studies, and methods. The group is currently accepting papers.

Comcast Corp. introduced a new service that allows Xfinity subscribers to watch live TV shows on their iPad via a set-top box called AnyPlay. Through the Xfinity TV app on the iPad and their home Wi-Fi router, AnyPlay allows users to watch the channels that are included in their subscription lineup.

Springer's SpringerLink science platform is now available in a free mobile app for iPhone and iPod touch, which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. The app contains articles from over 2,000 peer-reviewed journals and chapters from 49,000 books, totaling over 5.4 million documents.

Swets signed contracts with Brepols Publishers NV, Cairn.info, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), NecPlus, and RMIT Publishing. Future publications by these publishers will be available in Swets' ejournal gateway, SwetsWise Online Content.

Ex Libris Ltd. launched the North American early adopter program for the Alma library management service, and has added 11 North American institutions to its roster. The program designates Alma to manage each member institution's full range of library operations, preceding Alma's general release in 2012.

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, redesigned the interface for the Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL), its library-friendly online ebook platform. Gale improved navigation and organization as well as the display. GVRL now offers a multi-page viewer and a page flipper feature.

Big Fish Games, a video game publisher in Seattle, is using Apple's subscription feature to offer its titles on the iPad. Big Fish will let iPad users subscribe to access to dozens of its games for $6.99 per month. Games are streamed to the iPad from Big Fish's data centers and will require Wi-Fi.

The New York Times plans to extend its all-access tablet and smartphone digital subscriptions to companies and organizations with more than 50 employees. NYT offers a self-management tool so a company can assign, delete, and substitute access to individual employees.

The European Board for Accreditation in Cardiology (EBAC) approved four educational courses from CMEcast, a service launched by Informa Healthcare, as EBAC Accredited Educational Programmes. Informa Healthcare is reportedly the first publisher to receive EBAC accreditation for online continuing medical education (CME) courses.

Springer Science+Business Media agreed to acquire the Wolters Kluwer Pharma Marketing and Publishing Services division (MPS). Springer will add MPS to its Springer Healthcare unit. MPS provides strategic marketing, publishing, and business intelligence products and services to medical libraries, research institutions, and the pharmaceutical industry.

A multidisciplinary solution, VAST contains video content from Alexander Street's 21 individual collections. Amassing content from producers like BBC and PBS, VAST's 10,000 titles are cross-searchable.

Thomson Reuters needed to find a way to streamline its data monitoring and collection processes so that they could increase productivity and improve the quality of the data that they brought in. Content operation groups within the organization had been searching hundreds of websites manually, an ad hoc and unmanaged routine that didn't easily allow the sharing of best practices between the groups. Not only was it time-consuming, but it also posed a risk of coming up with inaccurate and incomplete data.

Cambridge University Press launched University Publishing Online, an ebook and digital content platform that aggregates content from several scholarly presses worldwide. Extending the Cambridge Books Online offering, University Publishing Online aims to provide libraries with ebooks and database products from academic publishers.

Elsevier B.V. collaborated with Ex Libris Group to deliver a bX article recommender application to mutual customers. The bX recommendations suggest further reading based on researchers' usage data, and will be available for integration with the Elsevier SciVerse interface. Users will see bX recommendations in addition to articles from Elsevier's Scopus and ScienceDirect databases.

Taylor & Francis Group announced the second phase launch of Routledge Online, a reference database for the social sciences and humanities. Routledge Online will be incorporating over 400 reference titles. Routledge Online also updated its user interface and enhanced its search functionality.

EBSCO Publishing acquired Ergonomics Abstracts, a database focused on ergonomics and human factors, from Taylor & Francis. The database provides indexing for ebooks, journal articles, and reference works, and includes abstracts of articles and records from more than 135,000 works covering more than 25 years of ergonomics research.

Elsevier B.V. launched SciVerse Scopus Alerts Individual, an iPhone and Android app for noninstitutional subscribers. The app allows users to peruse the Scopus database, which contains nearly 18,000 journal titles from more than 5,000 international publishers.
