Topix.net has announced that Gannett Co., Inc., Knight-Ridder, Inc., and Tribune Company jointly have acquired a 75% stake in Topix.net. Ownership is split evenly, with each media company owning 25% and the Topix.net founders retaining a 25% stake. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

H.W. Wilson's Biography Reference Bank database now includes some 5,000 profiles from Oxford University Press's American National Biography, a biographical reference series on people who have shaped American history and culture. In all, Biography Reference Bank covers over 500,000 people. This latest expansion follows the recent addition of some 100,000 names to the database, reflecting personal names cited as subjects in more than 50 WilsonWeb periodicals reference databases.

ProQuest Information and Learning, a provider of digital content from the 19th century, will digitize the full run of the British House of Commons Parliamentary Papers from 1801 to 1900 for release later this year. It will become part of ProQuest’s continuing program to support 19th-century scholarship, joining the Nineteenth Century Short Title Catalogue (NSTC), the bibliographic spine of the program, and other new resources.

Blackwell Publishing has announced the launch of a new service, Online Open, which offers authors the opportunity to make their articles freely available to all users of the internet in perpetuity on payment of a publication fee. The new Online Open service will be on trial through to the end of 2006.
