Wikimedia Foundation Receives $2 Million Google Grant

Feb 19, 2010

The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization behind Wikipedia, announced that it received a $2 million grant from Google's Charitable Giving Fund of Tides Foundation. The funds mark the first time that Google has contributed money to Wikipedia, and will be used to improve technical infrastructure and support the growing demands on the information website. Some of the funds will also be used to continue development into easier to use interfaces and accessibility.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin called Wikipedia "one of the greatest triumphs of the internet," adding that it is an invaluable resource for internet users. Likewise, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales expressed his organization's gratitude to Google for the gift. The two organizations have several ongoing relationships, including an effort to translate Wikipedia content into key languages via Google's Translation Toolkit.

Wikipedia is funded primarily through individual donations by regular users. A recent fundraiser raised $8 million from 240,000 individuals, representing three-quarters of the organization's planned revenue for the year.
