Twitter had its sixth birthday yesterday, March 21, and the microblogging service celebrated by sharing a few brief facts about its evolution. The company said in a post on the Twitter blog that it has 140 million active users who send 340 million messages a day.

Last year, on its fifth birthday, Twitter reported that its users sent more than 140 million tweets every day, adding up to 1 billion every 8 days.

Twitter users presently generate 1 billion tweets every 3 days. It took 3 years, 2 months, and 1 day to reach the first billion tweets, and around 18 months to reach its first 500,000 accounts. Now, half a million Twitter accounts are created each day.
