Twitter announced that it will be expanding its messaging service to include additional location-based functions thanks to its recent acquisition of Mixer Labs, creators of the GeoAPI comprehensive geolocation service. This move follows Twitter's earlier forays into locational features with its internally developed Geotagging API, released this past August.

Twitter indicated that the acquisition of GeoAPI will give additional tools to the developers of location-based Twitter-related apps such as Birdfeed, Foursquare, and Gowalla.
