Thomson Reuters Foundation launched the Emergency Information Service, a new program designed to respond to major national disasters around the world by deploying expert "Action-Units" of journalists to the scenes of major catastrophes to seek out, collect, and disseminate life-saving information. EIS units will travel to affected areas upon receiving news of a major disaster and use tools such as SMS messages to reach local populations, agencies, and media.

The launch of the EIS corresponds with the fifth anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami, and is accompanied by a documentary titled "Surviving the Tsunami: Stories of Hope," co-produced by Thomson Reuters and the Red Cross.
