Thomson Gale Introduces New Profiler Module

Aug 26, 2005

Thomson Gale introduces the Disease Profiler Module, a new addition to the Health and Wellness Resource Center product family. The module is the product of an agreement with Thomson Medstat. Both companies are part of The Thomson Corporation. The Disease Profiler is a collection of health-related statistics gathered anonymously from the health care programs of over 50 large companies from across the nation.

The statistics capture how approximately three to four million active or retired employees use their employers' health care system each year. The cost of care, disease prevalence and demographic information related to disease diagnoses are only a few of the insights provided by this view into the U.S. health-care system. The Disease Profiler data is organized into two databases: Commercial Claims and Encounters Database, which collects data reflecting the health care needs of the actively-employed population and their dependents; and Medicare Supplemental and COB Database, which collects data reflecting retired individuals' use of employer-paid Medicare supplemental insurance. The initial launch of Disease Profiler details the period from 1998 to 2003--aiding post-diagnosis research on recent health care trends--with annual updates expanding the scope of coverage.
