The Guardian Puts Up Paywall on iPad App

Jan 10, 2012

Beginning Friday, Jan. 13, the iPad app for The Guardian will require a £9.99 ($15.45 USD) monthly subscription in order for news readers to access content, according to paidContent. New users will be given a 7-day free trial before facing the subscription requirement.

Due to a sponsorship by the Channel Four Television Corp., content has been free thus far. The Guardian's iPhone app allows all users access to three free stories every day before requiring a monthly subscription (£2.99 for 6 months, £4.99 for 12 months, and free in the U.S.).

Parent company Guardian News and Media Ltd. claims there have been 500,000 downloads of the iPad app since its mid-October launch, but there were only 280,000 active users in December, according to, part of ContentNext Media, Inc.
