Springer Science+Business Media, supplier of scientific and specialist literature, has reached an agreement to acquire BioMed Central Group, an open access publisher. BioMed Central was launched in May 2000 as an independent publishing house committed to providing free access to peer-reviewed research in the biological and medical sciences. BioMed Central’s flagship journals include Journal of Biology, BMC Biology, BMC Medicine, Malaria Journal, BMC Bioinformatics, and Genome Biology.

Springer Science+Business Media also announced it is launching MyCopy, a pilot project to expand its services to eBook users. MyCopy allows a library’s registered patrons to order softcover copies, for their personal use, of those Springer eBooks that the library has purchased. Library patrons can order the titles they want by clicking on the MyCopy button on SpringerLink.
