RIM Rearranges, Prepares to Lay Off 2,000

Amid a push to streamline operations, Research in Motion (RIM) plans to cut 2,000 of its 19,000 employees as part of a "cost optimization program", according to TechCruch. The layoffs accompany some shifts at the top of the workforce as well. Dan Morrison, the company's current COO, is retiring. Thorsten Heins, former COO of Product Engineering, will take on the role of COO of Product and Sales, consolidating the responsibilities of COO. Patrick Spence will become managing director of global sales and regional marketing.

In other RIM news, the company acquired JayCut, a web-based video editing service based in Stockholm, Sweden.
