Quark announced the April 2011 launch of QuarkXPress 9, the newest version of the graphic design and page-layout software. QuarkXPress 9 allows users to publish directly to digital devices without the use of programming code, in addition to supporting print, web and Flash media publishing. The App Studio for QuarkXPress allows designers to create content for iPad apps or export content in ePUB to be published as an ebook, and according to Quark, it is the only page layout software that directly supports the Blio eReader platform.

New features like "Conditional Styles," "Callouts," and "Cloner" seek to automate more aspects of a designer's process, while "ShapeMaker" and "ImageGrid" are designed to ease the meticulousness of design tasks and "Story Editor" and "Linkster" provide user-friendly solutions for text that spans multiple pages.

QuarkXPress 9 will be available for $799, or as an upgrade from QuarkXPress 7 or QuarkXPress 8 for $299. Users who purchase QuarkXPress 8 this year until April 30 are eligible for a free upgrade to QuarkXPress 9.
