Promoted Tweets to be Only Twitter Advertisements

May 25, 2010

Eschewing the opportunity to generate more short-term advertising revenue, Twitter announced that it will not pursue any other form of advertising other than its Promoted Tweets. Promoted Tweets, an initiative that debuted only six weeks ago, is still in its infancy, and in the interest of developing the medium, Twitter announced a policy that prohibits third-party platforms from injecting paid tweets into a timeline on any service that leverages the Twitter API.

Promoted Tweets appear at the top of a user's Twitter feed, one at a time, and only when the user searches a keyword or hashtag term. In the interest of maintaining the streamlined user interface, keeping up user involvement, and reducing its own support costs, Twitter is making sure the only paid tweets its users see are Promoted Tweets.
