Pandora Buys Ticketfly

Tim Westergren, founder of Pandora, announced via the company blog that it has bought Ticketfly-an independent ticketing and digital marketing platform. Pandora paid a reported $450 million for Ticketfly. The aim is to help artists sell more tickets-especially at small venues-by targeting fans through Pandora. According to the post, "We've demonstrated that using smart, targeted messages, delivered to the right audience, at the right place, with the right music preferences can dramatically impact the attendance at shows."

This should be good news for artists, who often complain about the lack of compensation from streaming music services. If allowing your music to be streamed by Pandora directly leads to increased ticket sales, it will be an incentive for artists to sign up with the streaming service (perhaps, even, instead of with competitors).
