A new alliance to build an open mobile application platform has taken shape. The Wholesale Applications Community, a partnership of 24 telecommunications companies, aims to eliminate the network and software barriers that currently fragment the mobile apps market.

The alliance counts among its members such mobile companies as Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, Sprint, and AT&T. All told, these 24 companies have access to 3 billion customers worldwide. The Wholesale Applications Community also has support from three mobile device manufacturers: LG Electronics, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson.
