FileNet Corporation has announced that Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) has enhanced its existing FileNet ECM system by providing the Patient Accounts, Physician Billing, and Human Resources departments with secure Web access to administrative records, workflow automation, and redundancy for disaster recovery. Future enhancements of the system will allow patients to view their billing records in a secure, online environment. MSKCC, located in New York City, is a cancer treatment, research, and education facility. FileNet Professional Services and FileNet Customer Support Services, along with FileNet ValueNet Partner Avercom, New York, implemented the FileNet solution in an effort to automate the management and archiving of administrative patient information in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The new implementation is intended to enhance the ability of MSKCC staff to view information and make decisions quickly, as well as to view and annotate administrative patient information within the FileNet system. The FileNet system also supports the creation of a redundant information system for disaster recovery at MSKCC. All FileNet optical images and documents are captured by both a primary and back-up system. If the primary system fails for any reason, the back-up system is designed to protect the integrity of all administrative patient information, including security and compliance with HIPAA regulations. Future phases of the FileNet project are focused on allowing patients to view billing information in a secure, online environment. The FileNet system is also designed to allow collection agencies working on behalf of MSKCC to access all applicable billing records remotely, instead of having MSKCC send them files or copies.
