Media M&A Activity Up in 2005, According to Report

M&A activity surged across the media and information industries in 2005, reaching levels not seen since 2000, according to a new report. The year saw 525 deals completed, totaling $56 billion in value across the 11 sectors tracked by The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc. (JEGI), an investment bank for middle-market transactions in the media and information industries.

According to the report, the rise in M&A activity was led by the following key sectors: business-to-business magazines (number of deals up 10%; value up 42%); consumer magazines (value up 472%); directory and reference publishing (+26%; +246%); exhibitions and conferences (+44%; +128%); marketing and interactive services (+30%; +42%); newspaper publishing (+7%; +72%); and online media (+38%; +101%).
