BEST PRACTICES SERIES

IBM and the European Union (EU) have expanded their research partnership called IMPACT (IMProving ACcess to Text), which will enable the digitization of rare and culturally significant historical texts, to include more than two-dozen national libraries, research institutions, companies, and universities across Europe. IMPACT, funded by EU, offers guidance and new technology to various European institutions to insure that digital replicas of historically significant texts are widely available online in a searchable and editable format.

IMPACT's research utilizes both adaptive optical character recognition software and crowd computing technology, which allows those involved in the digitization effort to better account for the idiosyncrasies of outdated fonts and vocabularies. IMPACT partners include the British Library, ABBYY Production, and Universitat Innsbruck.
