IBM Introduces Systems Management Portfolio; Partners with Business Objects

IBM has introduced a systems management portfolio designed to allow companies to discover, monitor, and manage virtual and physical computing resources from a common portal, including IBM and non-IBM systems and software. The IBM Systems Director family is designed to allow clients to better manage all of their virtual and physical resources in the data center and works in conjunction with Tivoli offerings providing complete cross-enterprise systems management.

The Virtualization Manager dashboard operates in a web-based user interface and allows businesses to manage a client's technology resources like they would a financial portfolio, moving computing workloads to key areas of the data center that will drive productivity, identify problems in the infrastructure, grow existing workloads, and add or delete computing resources. The IBM Virtualization Manager includes initial support for VMware, Microsoft Virtual Server, System p virtualization and Xen based systems. Clients can also leverage the capabilities of VMware's VirtualCenter by integrating it into the IBM Systems Director to provide a single point of management. The developers helped to create a product that graphically shows and manages the relationships between virtual and physical systems. This view of the resource topology is a capability in the ability to manage virtual server environments. This new software also provides integration to full cross-enterprise systems management capabilities using Tivoli software solutions. These Tivoli software solutions provide a Service Management platform that enables process automation and integration. The IBM Virtualization Manager is available free of charge for download across IBM System x, BladeCenter, and System p servers. The software will support VMware, Xen, Microsoft Virtual Server, and System p virtualization.

IBM has also announced the formation of an alliance with Business Objects, a business intelligence software company. The new agreement is aimed at providing support for the thousands of joint Business Objects and IBM customers. As part of the expanded alliance, Business Objects and IBM are increasing investment in the areas of joint solution development, tighter product integration, global industry support, and expansion of the Business Objects Center of Competency.
