If you've come to rely on Google Reader to bring you your personally curated news, you probably won't like to hear that Google has announced it's shutting down Google Reader as of July 1, 2013. Google announced the news on Wednesday via a blog post, and positioned it as another step toward focusing on its core products:
"To make the most of these opportunities, we need to focus-otherwise we spread ourselves too thin and lack impact. So today we're announcing some more closures, bringing the total to 70 features or services closed since our spring cleaning began in 2011."
The Reader isn't the only tool getting the ax in this round, though it's probably the most popular. Google Building Maker, the voice app for Blackberry, and the search API for shopping are all being shut down, among others.
