Google Editions, the forthcoming cloud bookstore from the Menlo Park, Calif.-based internet giant, will be available on multiple platforms and mobile devices, the company announced. Not only will the Google Editions collection be available online, but content will be available through apps for Android-based smartphones, the Apple iPad, and, in the future, other mobile devices. Another focus of Google Editions is allowing smaller, independent booksellers to distribute their content via Google Editions extensions on their own websites. The Google Editions affiliates program allows Google to act like a wholesaler, reducing publishing costs for the independent vendors.
Google Editions will also feature material from the American Bar Association (ABA) starting this summer. The non-exclusive arrangement allows the ABA to continue to sell ebooks through its current partner, the IndieBound.com website from Ingram.
