Giesecke & Devrient and Vodafone Develop SIM Card Security Platform

Mar 08, 2011

Giesecke & Devrient and Vodafone are developing mobile security applications that employ the SIM card as a key for authentication and encryption, including an application that involves SIM card-based authentication for access to a company network. The pilot projects for these applications were presented at CeBIT 2011, the international information and communications technology trade show hosted in Hannover, Germany, March 1-5 this year.

In these applications, the key is securely stored behind the SIM card's cryptoprocessor and is used to establish a secure connection via a VPN, which allows users to gain mobile wireless access to company networks. The app is designed to add more simplicity and convenience to mobile authentication and encryption solutions. The developed concept is also suitable for other applications, such as encrypting all the voice and email traffic on a smartphone.
